Welcome to FanimeCon 2023! We’re so excited to send you this year’s FanimeCon, a fan-made love letter to all things Japanese anime and culture. This year’s theme is postal service! Post offices, delivery, mail, and stationary are threaded through many anime and real life, such as Violet Evergarden and Kiki’s Delivery Service, or the cute stationary and postcards from far off places we send and receive. We’re excited to see how this theme has evolved as we planned for 2023 and are eager to share it with you. We are thrilled to be welcoming back many events to FanimeCon 2023, including Masquerade, Music Fest, Silver Island, Swap Meet, Video Rooms, and so much more!

With an all-volunteer staff (yes, even me!), FanimeCon is truly by fans, for fans. We depend on our fan community to staff one of the largest anime conventions in the United States. If you have some time to spare, consider volunteering for FanimeCon by taking a stroll to Volunteers and signing up for a few hours. We’re deeply grateful and appreciative to all of our staff and volunteers who donate even just an hour to help us put on FanimeCon!

Thank you all in advance for taking one more year to follow some extra precautions to keep our community safe as we gather together. Everyone did such a great job last year in doing their best to follow our policies, and we are so grateful for your patience and grace as we continue them for one more year.

Greetings!

I hope this letter finds you well. We’re so happy that you all decided to join us this year! I’m writing this while imagining all the amazing cosplays that we’ll see around the Idea Tree, the incredible events and programming happening all throughout the convention spaces, and the wonderful items for sale in our Dealer’s Hall and Artist Alley. We’re excited to see our amazing community return to hang out and catch up on what has been going on over the past year, while enjoying the themed programming that FanimeCon has delivered this year. We can’t wait to see what cosplays and props show up at con! With the many anime, manga, and video games within the envelope of the post office theme, we’re sure that it was a fun and challenging experience choosing between them all for a single weekend. Thank you to our incredible Guests of Honor for choosing to come spend time with us at FanimeCon. We know that they will be good carriers of fun and enjoyment for our wonderful attendees! Last but not least,

thank you to our staff of volunteers for all of the amazing work that they continue to do that makes this show possible. We could not do this without them!

How are you? It has been a year since I last wrote to you, and I would like to let you know that FanimeCon’s theme this year is postal service!

You may expect returning favorites in this year’s care package–whether it is a friendly face at Swap Meet, a performance at the Masquerade, Video Rooms at the DoubleTree, or a titillating evening at Silver Island.

The same well-loved friends will be there when you come back, too. Maid Café, Black & White Ball, Gaming Hall, Cosplay Gatherings, J-Fashion, Stage Zero… Everyone, including our illustrious Guests of Honor, will be at postcardworthy spots, happily awaiting your arrival.

And of course, Artist Alley and Dealer’s Hall will still have a lovely array of stationary picks for you to finally write that letter to you-know-who!

To whomever it may concern,

Whether you say Yuubinkyoku (郵便局), Posto ofisu (ポスト オフィス), or post office, we have all encountered mail in some way, shape, or form through the post office. In the USA, we have our wonderful United States Postal Service (USPS), but in Japan, the post office went through many iterations and as of 2007 is known as the Nippon Yūsei Kabushiki Gaisha. While the Japanese post office may have changed, FanimeCon is returning with all the stuff you love – and then some! With the post office as our theme this year, we aim to deliver a plethora of events back in action!

To begin with, Silver Island is making a comeback this year for everyone who missed an adult twinge in the night. Alongside them is our wonderful Video Department to showcase all the newest, oldest, and wackiest anime for your

eyes to feast. “Cooing” along (Get it? Carrier pigeons? Only me? Okay...) for all our cosplayers, the Cosplay Masquerade flies back in with Aicosu hosting the show and presenting us with all the amazing cosplays that you all have to offer! Last, but not least, Swap Meet returns for anyone and everyone who wants to clean out their collections while making an extra buck to spend on all the new merch over in the Dealer’s Hall and Artist Alley!

These events are just at the top of the “Fanimail” box! There are plenty more to enjoy, laugh at, and feel right at home with throughout your stay at FanimeCon! And a big, wonderful thank you to all our staff and volunteers, who are what make FanimeCon “By Fans, For Fans." Safe Travels and Deliveries!

CSI: Convention Safety Initiative

To keep FanimeCon safe and healthy, we will require anyone who enters any FanimeCon space to wear their badge and adhere to our 2023 COVID-19 policy. This will be enforced for the duration of FanimeCon 2023.

FanimeCon has grown substantially from small anime club roots to one of the largest anime conventions in North America. Along the way, we’ve experienced growing pains like any other convention or event. We kindly request your continued patience and wholeheartedly welcome any and all feedback during these times of change. Our primary goal has always been and always will be to facilitate as safe and healthy an environment as possible. By implementing our CSI, we hope to work towards continuing and improving on that mission. So again, thank you all, and we hope you have an amazing and safe time at FanimeCon!

To make it easy on our badge checkers, please hold your badge and proof of COVID-19 policy compliance out so they can be easily read. The easier it is for FanimeCon staff to see your badge, the faster the line will move! In the interest of health, please don't let anyone touch your badge except for FanimeCon staff and security. Thank you!

FanimeCon COVID-19 Policies

This year, everyone attending FanimeCon 2023 must be fully vaccinated prior to May 25, 2023. This means all attendees, guests, and staff will need all recommended doses in the primary series and one booster. We are not allowing negative COVID-19 tests or medical or personal exemptions instead of being fully vaccinated, including children under six months old who are not eligible to be vaccinated. We hope that we will be able to welcome everyone back in a future year.

FanimeCon will require all attendees, guests, and staff to wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all FanimeCon indoor event spaces. In addition to our indoor event spaces, masks will be required to be worn when outside in front of the San Jose Convention Center due to crowded conditions. Prolonged periods of mask removal are not permitted for eating or drinking; the mask must be worn between bites, sips, and taking medication. Exceptions include personal hotel rooms; designated eating and drinking areas; or FanimeCon performers actively on stage performing. Designated eating and drinking areas will be clearly marked with signs.

Please follow masking policies for restaurants and other spaces operated by our facility partners. In accordance with California guidelines, policies will be posted at the entrance of each establishment.

KEISUKE UEDA

Keisuke Ueda is an actor and singer primarily active on stage, particularly in 2.5 Dimensional Musicals: stage shows based on anime, manga, and games. Since his debut in 2007, he has portrayed such popular characters as Sangaku Manami ( Yowamushi Pedal ), Japan ( Hetalia ), Chuya Nakahara ( Bungo Stray Dogs ), Hisoka Mikage ( MANKAI STAGE 「A3! 」 ), Zenitsu Agatsuma (Stage Play: Demon Slayer ), Yuma Kuga ( World Trigger the Stage), Vanitas ( The Case Study of Vanitas ), and Chifuyu Matsuno ( Tokyo Revengers: Bloody Halloween ), among others.

In addition to acting in over 100 stage productions throughout his career, he has also appeared in TV dramas and live-action movies, lent his voice to anime and games, and last year made his directorial debut with an original play, Hajimari no Curtain Call ~Your Note~ . As a voice actor, he is best known as Heine Wittgenstein in the anime The Royal Tutor , whose voice cast also reprised their roles in the 2.5D musical version.

Mr. Ueda debuted as a solo artist in 2018 with the single, “START LINE ~Toki no Wadachi~” and has released three albums since then. His latest album, RE , came out on CD and streaming services in March this year. His first

cover album, RE features songs associated with some of his many projects including GRANRODEO’s “Passion” (used for Bungo Stray Dogs on stage–STORM BRINGER ), Shogo Sakamoto’s “Shoppai Namida” (the theme song for The Royal Tutor ), and “Kamisama no Shizuku” from the musical Hetalia .

After appearing as a virtual guest last year, Mr. Ueda returns to FanimeCon in person, performing for the first time outside of Japan at MusicFest!

CHERAMI LEIGH

Cherami Leigh has been acting for over 20 years and has appeared on Friday Night Lights, Shameless, Chase, Bones, NCIS:LA, and more. She also worked on Fast Food Nation, The Mist, The Hottest State, Not Cool , the Emmy-winning film Temple Grandin , and played the young LeAnn Rimes in Holiday in Your Heart . She also starred in the faith-based film Beyond the Farthest Star . She has worked on over 50 video games and over 150 animated projects. Kyle McCarley grew up (but not really) in Kansas and moved to Los Angeles at age 18 to study acting. After getting hooked on playing World of Warcraft with his buddies, he co-wrote, co-directed, and voiced several characters in a fan-made online radio play loosely set in that universe. Once he finished his Theater degree at the University of Southern California, he decided to further pursue that passion in the form of a career in voice acting. Kyle’s voice can now be heard in anime, video games, cartoons, audiobooks, live action dubs, TV and radio commercials, industrial ads, and even a talking toy plunger.

HIROKATSU KIHARA

Hirokatsu Kihara is a highly accomplished industry veteran with a career spanning several decades. He began his journey as a production coordinator for the anime movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and quickly caught the attention of director Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki then headhunted Kihara to join the team at Studio Ghibli.

During his time at Studio Ghibli, Kihara worked closely with Miyazaki and played an integral role in the production of several critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service

After leaving Studio Ghibli, Kihara opened a new chapter in his career as a scary story author. He has written many scary stories that have

been adapted into TV series and movies. Kihara's most significant project in recent years is a collaboration book with horror manga artist Junji Ito, titled Mimi-no-Kaidan. The book has been translated into seven different languages and has gained a cult following.

FanimeCon would like to welcome Kihara as a Guest of Honor for the first time! This year marks the 35th anniversary of My Neighbor Totoro, one of his most popular films, and we are very excited to celebrate with him. Check out his panels for in depth animation talk, or snag an autograph from him!

JIRARD KHALIL

Jirard Khalil, better known as The Completionist, has completed hundreds of games over the years on YouTube and Twitch. He’s helped raise millions of dollars for several charities such as Direct Relief, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Open Hand Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Water.org, and so many more. Jirard was a part of the reboot of G4TV in 2021 as one

of the main hosts of X-Play, and also created a narrative show called God of Work. More recently, Jirard is starting to branch over into game development as a producer and game tester. Jirard is very happy to be returning to FanimeCon for another year of gaming!

Linda Le aka VampyBitMe is a cosplayer originally from a small town in Oklahoma, who now resides in California. She was discovered by Japanese company Kotobukiya and featured in OTACOOL 2 by Danny Choo, where her costumes became a worldwide success! Since then, she has been featured on Marvel.com; partnered with Capcom, Bandai, DC, and other game companies; as well as featured on CNN in "24 Hours in the Life of a Worldwide Cosplayer.” She continues to travel the world for cosplay and game events, excitedly talking about armor making, building Gunpla, creating

Jordana Robinson started Mossbadger in 2012 when her interests in Lolita fashion and textile design inevitably led her to want to create her own custom printed fabric and accessories. Her prints and designs are influenced by symbology, folklore, history, and magic—especially fairy stories of witches and woodland creatures. She uses a mix of silkscreen printing and digital textile design to bring her prints to life, as well as millinery techniques and resin casting for unique

accessories needed to complete the look. She has shown her designs at conventions and fashion events in the United States, Europe, and Japan. FanimeCon would like to welcome Jordana as our first ever J-Fashion Guest of Honor! Throughout the weekend, you’ll be able to find her at our various J-Fashion events such as the fashion shows, the Coordinate Contest, and selling her fantastical designs at the Trunk Show. Jordana will also be hosting interactive panels for fans of Lolita and J-Fashion.

JORDANA ROBINSON VAMPYBITME

Currently Vampy is a host for Bandai Namco Collectables Hobby as well as the Social and Community Manager for the new first-person team shooter title GUNDAM EVOLUTION. She was recently announced as a feature Elite General Trooper Card in the latest Like a Dragon: Ishin! video game.

AICOSU

Darling and Sylar, known together as Aicosu, believe that cosplay should be cheap, easy, and accessible for everyone, and strive to make that a reality through their craft.

Aicosu ( 愛コス, aikosu) is a portmanteau of the Japanese translation of Love ( 愛 ) Cosplay (コ スプレ ) or Lover's Cosplay. Darling and Sylar formed Aicosu in 2009 after meeting at a convention.

After 15 years cosplaying together they have attended over 100 conventions, made over 200 cosplays, Masters accolades, and a myriad of panels and workshops. You're likely to see them on the Concourse, hosting the Cosplay

Masquerade, or tabling at Artist Alley, ready to answer any question!

FanimeCon is excited to have our favorite cosplay couple back again in 2023.

YASHAFLUFF

Yashafluff, also known as Yasha, is a cosplayer who has been part of the community for over ten years. She is a strong advocate for cosplay as a hobby that can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter their skill level, age, or current chapter in life. Yasha’s cosplay journey has taken her to conventions around the world, and she has had the opportunity to work with gaming companies

like Yostar and Hoyoverse. Her passion for the art of cosplay makes itself clear through the extensive planning she puts in prior to every photoshoot, where she pushes herself to achieve the highest level of accuracy so she can bring her favorite characters to life. Her specialties are cosplay makeup and wig styling.

After being asked for many years to share makeup tips, she finally has the opportunity to teach at FanimeCon!

GILLES POITRAS

Gilles was born in Quebec, Canada and raised in a farm town in Northern California. He played with Japanese wooden toys bought at the corner store, watched girls at school do origami, and played various games that few of the kids knew were from Japan. In high school he became a fan of world cinema, leading him to explore what little was known in English about anime in grad school. One day at work he received a phone call from a friend who had discovered a new student club at U.C. Berkeley, Cal Animage Alpha, devoted to anime. For years he attended regularly and became irrevocably hooked on anime and manga.

He has written three books on anime and articles for various magazines. For several years he also sat on the senior board of Mechademia, an annual scholarly anthology of essays on anime, manga, and fan culture. He has done presentations on anime for various Japan–US friendship

groups, libraries, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, conventions, librarians, the Smithsonian, and once even taught an eight week course on the subject for Pixar staff.

In his spare time he reads manga, watches anime, and researches Japan. He often visits Tokyo, a city he is so interested in that he has been called a Tokyo otaku by a friend who lived there.

This eventually led to his latest book Tokyo Stroll, a guide to 22 interesting neighborhoods to wander about in.

Gilles has been a long-time guest of FanimeCon, beloved by many attendees for his intimate knowledge of anime, manga, and traveling to Japan. FanimeCon is happy to have him join us once again for more stellar panels and events!

Registration Info

General

Registration is the first place to go when you arrive at FanimeCon. This is where you pick up your badge for fully paid online registration, or to register and pay for membership at the convention. Please consult fanime.com/registration-faq or the FanimeCon Pocket Guide for the Registration FAQs and hours.

Lost Badge Policy

In the event that you lose or misplace your badge, please check with Lost & Found to see if it has been found and returned. If your badge has not been returned, then you may request a replacement badge. The cost of the first reprint is $50 for a full or half-weekend badge or $35 for a single day badge. If you lose or misplace your badge a second time (assuming it has not been returned to Lost & Found), you will be charged the full, at-con price for a badge replacement. A replacement badge will invalidate your original badge, and there are NO refunds for your replacement badge, if you should find your original badge.

Industry and Press

SJCC – Room 114

Professional Registration (ProReg) handles badges for members of the press covering FanimeCon, as well as creators, executives, and marketing personnel in the anime, manga, and related industries. Unfortunately, ProReg for FanimeCon 2023 is only available for pre-registration this year and will not be available at the convention itself. Please see the ProReg FAQ on the FanimeCon website for more information.

Info Desk is back and ready to help you navigate FanimeCon! This year we will have a desk at Stage Zero and at Registration to help answer your

questions, direct you to where you need to go, and to help you have the best time at FanimeCon!

This year we ask that you please keep your face mask on when interacting with our staff as we work to assist you. As always: you’ve got questions, we have the answers!

FanimeCon needs your help!

Volunteer for only 20 hours and get a full reimbursement on your weekend badge! Badge reimbursements are also available for half weekend and single day badges*.

Volunteers are wanted at all hours and in virtually all departments! Stop by and find a schedule that works for you. Must have a FanimeCon attendee badge and be at least 13 years of age to volunteer**. Individuals below the age of 18 must have a minor waiver form completed with a photocopy of your legal guardian's ID to register to be a volunteer. Minors must have a government-issued ID or school ID as well.

Volunteering requirement per age range:

*18 and up:

Full weekend: 20 hours.

Half weekend: 10 hours.

Single day: 5 hours.

**13–17:

Full weekend: 16 hours.

Half weekend: 8 hours.

Single day: 4 hours.

Emergency Services

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and San Jose Police Department (SJPD) officers are always available on-site. If any emergencies occur, please contact

Convention Operations (ConOps is located in the Hilton Hotel on the second floor) or the nearest Staff member as soon as possible.

Lost & Found

Lost & Found is just that – where you go to look for (or turn in!) any lost items. If you’ve found something, please bring it to us and we’ll hold onto it! If you’ve lost something, please stop by and describe it to us. With any luck, someone’s turned it in! This department can be found on the second floor of the Hilton San Jose in the San Carlos room with ConOps. Note: Please be patient when trying to track down something you’ve lost. Many people who find a lost item or badge turn it in when they have a chance, which is not always right when they find it or when you’ve lost it. FanimeCon Lost & Found turns over all items to the San Jose Convention Center after the convention. The SJCC will hold the items for three months. Please get in touch with Lost & Found after the convention at lost@fanime. com for the SJCC contact information. Please don’t email us during the convention; we will be busy reuniting attendees with their items.

Convention Etiquette

While you are at FanimeCon, always remember to be respectful of others by not invading their personal space, such as not touching people or their property. Always remember to ask others if it is ok to take their picture. Cosplay is not consent. Remember to be considerate and never block traffic. If you are looking to take a photo of a cosplay, kindly ask the cosplayer if they are ok stepping out of the traffic flow to take the photo. Keep FanimeCon a fun and safe place for everyone.

Autographs

Please note that the Autographs queuing process was completely overhauled in 2022. If you did not attend last year, make sure you check the FanimeCon website for info about our new system and policies, or come to the Autographs area and an Autographs staff member will be happy to assist!

FanimeCon has designated a special area for our attendees and Guests of Honor to create cherished memories and obtain autographs. The schedule (found online and in your Pocket Guide!) will have the times and places where our Guests of Honor will sign autographs. Please keep social distancing and our other new policies in mind when attending autograph sessions. Remember, these people are our guests and should be treated with the utmost respect. Kindness and smiles go a long way! Have fun and enjoy your time with this year's Guests of Honor!

Lactation Room

The San Jose Convention Center now offers a Lactation Room on the second floor of the Convention Center, outside Artist Alley near the bathrooms. It is available during the operating hours of the convention to all who require the space. If you have any difficulty accessing or using the room, please find the nearest staffer and ask for assistance.

Fan Storage

Marriott San Carlos Room

Tired of lugging your heavy backpacks and cumbersome cosplay? Need some place to keep your Artist Alley swag and Dealer’s Hall loot for a bit? Heading to the Black & White Ball or Dance, but don’t have a place to put your jackets? Fan Storage will gladly hold any items: coats, cosplays, props, luggage, small items – you name it! For a small fee, you can store your

belongings in a safe place and pick them up when you like – just stop by the Fan Storage room! Now available at the first floor of the Marriott Hotel!

Policy Relations

Policy Relations is a department that works with Convention Security to address and resolve safety concerns during the convention. If you or someone you know feels unsafe for any reason, we encourage you to notify any FanimeCon staff or Convention Security staff and we will do everything in our power to assist you. You can also reach us by sending a TEXT to 1 (414) FANIME1 (1-414-326-4631).

FanimeCon is committed to providing a safe environment for our attendees and staff. The Code of Conduct outlined below details the expected behavior our attendees and staff must adhere to. By attending FanimeCon, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct. All attendees and staff must follow the FanimeCon 2023 COVID-19 Policy. By attending FanimeCon 2023, you are voluntarily assuming all risks related to the exposure of COVID-19. For more information regarding the COVID-19 Policy, please check the FanimeCon website.

Badges

FanimeCon badges are the physical representation of the ticket that attendees have purchased and are the property of FanimeCon for the duration of FanimeCon. You will need to show your badge at designated checkpoints to enter Convention Center space.

• Badges must be worn on your person, above the waist, and easily visible while in Convention Center space

• Badges are non-transferable.

• Badges may not be duplicated or altered.

• Badges may be revoked at any time by qualified Security and FanimeCon staff members. Entry to events will be denied if a badge is revoked.

Facilities

The San Jose Convention Center, Cultural Facilities, and surrounding hotels have hosted FanimeCon for many years. To promote good relations with these entities, please respect the facilities by leaving them and any equipment in the same condition as you found them.

• Keep all aisles, exits, fire safety devices, and concession stands clean, visible, and unobstructed.

• Do not affix anything to any surface, including walls, doors, panels, and columns, in the Convention Center space.

• Do not use the white courtesy phones in Convention Center space. The white phones do not provide outside telephone service; they are used only to contact emergency services or Convention Center personnel.

• Do not move or tamper with any furniture or equipment. Inform Convention Operations staff if anything should be moved or repaired.

• Do not use any electrical outlets in the Convention Center.

• Only individuals with disabilities or prior approval from Convention Operations may use transportation devices indoors.

• Shoes must be worn at all times.

• Pets and companion animals are not allowed inside Convention Center space. FanimeCon complies with the ADA Guidelines, which define a Service Animal. A Service Animal must be trained to aid a person with a disability.

Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited. Additional items may be added to this list by FanimeCon at any time.

• Glitter, gum, confetti, and balloons.

• Weapons.

• Alcohol.

• Smoking devices, such as cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaporizers, pipes, and bongs.

• Illegal substances.

• Skateboards, bicycles, scooters, roller-blades, and other non-medical wheeled devices.

• Drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other remote-control vehicles.

• Laser pointers, fog machines, strobe lights, and other devices that produce disruptive lights.

• Megaphones and devices that produce disruptive noises.

• Outside food and drink may not be sold or distributed on the premises without prior permission, licenses, permits, and insurance.

• Signs that contain profanity, that are not part of a cosplay, or that solicit goods or services.

Etiquette

FanimeCon wants to ensure a safe and fun convention for everyone. Please utilize good judgment, be respectful, and show courtesy to everyone around you. This includes Guests of Honor; Convention Center and hotel personnel; FanimeCon staff; and fellow attendees.

• Cosplay is not consent. Do not hug, touch, or photograph anyone without receiving permission.

• Comply with the FanimeCon Props Policy. Get all props Peace-bonded. Do not brandish props in a threatening manner.

• Be respectful to other attendees and staff. Treat others how you would want to be treated.

• Respect everyone’s personal space. Move carefully through the Convention Center space and maintain a flow of traffic. Be mindful of props and do not run indoors.

• Do not verbally attack, abuse, harass, or threaten anyone regarding their race, religion, political views, gender, orientation, age, or other protected attributes. Personal attacks and harassment are not allowed. Bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, and other forms of prejudice are not allowed.

• Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations at all times.

• No disorderly conduct such as loitering, public intoxication, indecent exposure, begging, or soliciting.

• FanimeCon is a dry convention. Alcohol, drugs,

and illegal substances are prohibited in Convention Center space. Intoxication is not tolerated in Convention Center space. Do not sell or distribute alcohol to minors.

• Do not smoke or vape inside any public buildings or within 25 feet of any entrance.

• Re-sale of hotel rooms is strictly prohibited.

*Convention Center Space includes, but is not limited to: the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose Marriott, Hilton San Jose, Civic Auditorium, South Hall, Signia Hilton San Jose, DoubleTree San Jose, and the Idea Tree.

FanimeCon reserves the right to modify the Code of Conduct at any time.

Props Policy

FanimeCon reserves the right to modify or update this policy at any time and without prior notice. Your FanimeCon badge means that you agree to comply with this Props Policy. You further understand and agree that, for your own safety and the safety of everyone at FanimeCon, designated staff members have the absolute and immediate discretion and right to inspect your costume, props, weapons, and any other item you bring to the convention. We may temporarily or permanently remove any attendee’s Peace-bond at our sole and absolute discretion at any time for violating this Props Policy.

• Your prop must accompany the costume that you are wearing in order to be Peace-bonded.

• Canes and other assistive devices do not require Peace-bonding and are allowed in badge-restricted areas.

• No prop that is designed primarily as a weapon (such as a sword, staff, or club) may be made of metal, regardless of how sharp or dull the prop may be.

– Props with metal decoration or adornment will be judged on a case-by-case basis.

• No firearms, airsoft weapons, replicas of guns, or props that use components of these in their construction are allowed.

– Any prop gun must look like a prop from 50 feet away. This is for your safety and for the safety of our other attendees.

– Gun and firearm-style props must have an orange tip, plus two other orange bands.

• No functional bows and arrows.

• No metal or wood bats, metal pipes, or long metal chains.

• Props should not be made of glass or contain glass components.

– This includes, but is not limited to, bottles, glass tubes, solid glass statues, etc.

• Any item that is designed or manufactured with the intent to cause bodily injury or death, any item that is illegal in the state of California, or any other item that appears dangerous or may pose a risk of harm will not be allowed on the premises. This will be up to the sole discretion of qualified FanimeCon staff.

• No smoke machines are allowed within the Convention Center.

• Any lights that blink rapidly or brightly enough that they disturb other attendees should not be included in props. Lights that slowly transition from one color to another or gradually increase in brightness overtime will be judged on a caseby-case basis.

– Lightsabers are allowed but you must be careful with them.

• Operating a prop to shoot an object of any material is not allowed at FanimeCon and will result in your Peace-bond being removed.

We may revoke the Peace-bonding at any time at our sole discretion. For example, we will revoke approval if you use or brandish the item in an inappropriate fashion (such as play fighting, swinging the weapon around,

or if someone is hit intentionally or otherwise). We will also revoke approval if we receive complaints about the way you are using or displaying your prop, or if you tamper with the Peace-bonding used to show that your prop has been tagged. If your Peace-bond is revoked, you will need to take the prop off of convention property immediately.

Peace-bonded Weapons at the Event

You may display your prop weapons only as costume pieces. Do not swing or brandish your prop weapon in any way that could be considered unsafe or threatening. You may pose with a prop weapon in a brandishing manner, so long as no reasonable person would interpret it as anything but a pose for dramatic effect. FanimeCon staff or FanimeCon management may stop your posed brandishing at their sole discretion. Current U.S. military uniforms, costumes that may be confused with law enforcement, or other emergency response personnel are not permitted at FanimeCon.

If You Buy Props or Weapons at the Convention

• If you buy a weapon in the Dealer’s Hall, it needs to stay taped in its box and taken off convention property as soon as possible. Live steel will not be Peace-bonded.

• If you buy a prop at FanimeCon, you may have it tagged with a Peacebond as long as it belongs with the cosplay you are currently wearing and follows the Props Policy. If not, the prop needs to be removed from

the premises and taken to your hotel room or car.

FanimeCon Costume Rules & Limitations

• All con attendees must wear shoes at all times while in official convention space. This includes, but is not limited to, the: San Jose Convention Center, Marriott, Hilton, Signia by Hilton, Civic Center, DoubleTree, and Parkside Hall. Even if a character goes barefoot, the cosplayer must wear shoes.

• Costumes and daily wear shall not expose the body in such a way as to be deemed indecent exposure under California and City of San Jose ordinances. Private parts must be covered in an opaque material and not be subject to slippage or gaps. Liquid Latex or other conformal body coatings will be judged on a caseby-case basis.

• All costumes worn within the Convention Center must fit through a standard doorway.

• No costume may generate odor, smoke, or fog, or have overly bright or flashing lights.

• All costumes with limited visibility and/or movement must have a handler to assist with crowd navigation and safety. This also applies to costumes with large wings or other oversized elements.

• No costumes may be realistic depictions of American Law Enforcement or current American Military uniforms, or have the words POLICE, POLICIA, SWAT, FBI, DEA, CIA or any other official Government Agency names or initials on them.

• Official flags must be respected and cannot be worn as part of a costume. They must be on a flagpole. Homemade or unofficial flags are exempt from this rule.

We're back! Now called "Party Quiz," we've been the official game show of FanimeCon for over two decades. Each of our hour-long shows feature a different format. Some of our games test your reflexes, where the fastest buzzer will have an advantage. Others require deep memory mastery, while others will require contestants to spot the smallest detail. We also have picture rounds, category rounds, spelling rounds, and maybe even a drawing round or two.

Contestants will be quizzed on a medley of topics including anime, video games, and general knowledge. A single game might run from Bleach to Bayonetta to BTS, from Fullmetal Alchemist to Final Fantasy to french fries. How is your RPG lore? Have you brushed up on your favorite classic anime series? Do you know your world capitals? You never know what might come up during the games. Players who score well can walk away with prizes such as plushies, gift cards, and figures. In addition, each day concludes with a jackpot round. Contestants can win hundreds of dollars in actual cash if they are fast and lucky enough. We've given away hundreds during each show before, and we're looking to do it again!

We select all of our contestants from the audience, so just show up, and you can play and win! Come on up and show off your knowledge!

The Gaming Hall offers arcade, console, PC, and tabletop games for players of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the Gaming Stage is located within the Gaming Hall, and will be showcasing select tournaments and attendee engagement events!

• Masks: Masks must be worn inside the Gaming Hall, as per the 2023 Code of Conduct.

– You may remove your mask for brief moments for bites of food, taking sips of your drink, and taking medication.

• Hand Sanitizers: Hand sanitizer stations will be available at all Gaming Operations Desks.

– We recommend hand sanitizer use and/or washing your hands before and after playing games.

– Please notify a staffer if a hand sanitizer station is not functional or empty.

Location Rules

• The Gaming Hall is a harassment-free zone. Please be a good human being!

• If you feel unsafe or need to report a problem, please flag any FanimeCon staff member and they can assist you.

• If you are unable to flag a FanimeCon staffer, please contact ConOps.

– ConOps is located in the Hilton Hotel, San Carlos Room (Second Floor).

– Contact information for ConOps is located on the back of your 2023 badge.

• Gaming Hall staff reserve the right to ask attendees to leave the Gaming Hall due to safety concerns and/or potential Code of Conduct violations.

• “Gaming station” refers to any Arcade, Tabletop table, or eGaming location.

• Events and Tournaments are free of charge. Sign-ups and information are located at the eGaming or Tabletop desks.

– Please arrive 20-30 minutes early before any event for check in!

– Registration for any eGaming tournament event will close two hours before event start time, to ensure fair seeding!

• There will be no waitlist for these tournaments.

• If you are unable to participate after signing up, please return to the eGaming tournament desk and inform staff.

• Any input device for tournament use may be subject to inspection by tournament organizers, to ensure competitive integrity.

– Trading Card Game Tournaments are located in the TCG Game Room, located in the Hilton–Almaden Ballroom.

• eGaming: “Bring Your Own Controller” (BYOC) + Joystick/ Input Device, etc.

– Attendees may use their own controller or input devices for certain console stations.

The Gaming Event Stage is looking to deliver some high quality entertainment to all FanimeCon attendees! Looking to have some fun and a good time? Or maybe you’re back with a vengeance to prove you’re the best! We feature, host, and commentate on recreational and competitive games alike! Take a look in your Pocket Guide to see all of the tournaments and events, or if a Guest of Honor is hosting one so you don’t miss out!

Recreational events start as early as 9:00 am, ranging from chaotic multiplayer games like Duck Game and Moving Out, to competitive multiplayer games like Super Smash Bros: Ultimate and Mario Kart 8. In the twilight hours (until 1:00 am), we’ll be hosting Jackbox Party Pack games to help you wind down and have a good laugh. From afternoon until evening, we will be broadcasting the convention’s top talent as they compete for prizes and glory! Can’t come by and watch? Visit

Arcade Gaming

Need a break from walking around the con? Did someone just challenge you to a DDR dance off? Looking to relive the nostalgia of arcades from back in the day?

Head on down to the Gaming Hall and check out the Arcade area, presented by Game Saru! It's free to play and open to all attendees!

We are also having arcade tournaments hosted by the community–please check the Arcade section on the FanimeCon website or app for details and sign-up location.

Please limit your play to one game per person when a line is present. Shoes must be worn at all times while inside the Gaming Hall. We highly recommend using hand sanitizer (or washing your hands) before and after playing games.

eGaming

This year, eGaming is sure to deliver a rich gaming hall experience for all types of gamers. Are you a PC gamer? Feel free to come by our LAN sector, stocked with computers and classic LAN cafe games like Starcraft: Brood War and League of Legends. Are you a console gamer? This year, eGaming is pleased to announce that we will have more consoles, bigger tournaments, and a brand new dedicated tournament stage on top of casual console freeplay throughout the weekend!

FanimeCon’s Dance Hall is back! This year we’ll be bringing you a brand new lineup featuring fresh faces who have the tunes to get you grooving all night long. These folks may be new to FanimeCon but they’ve definitely made a name for themselves in The Bay Area music scene.

The Dance Hall will start at 8:00 pm with a variety of DJs, who will bring you all kinds of music ranging anywhere from House, Disco, Trap… maybe even your favorite anime tracks!

Our line up consists of hand-selected artists from Bay Area Music Collective, Boots N’ Cats Entertainment, Crash Course, Twitch Streaming Sensations, and a few returning veterans. We hope to see you all there!

Dance Hall Rules

All FanimeCon rules and Code of Conduct apply to attendees of the FanimeCon Dance, with the following additions:

• Attendees are subject to a precursory security check (please have ID and Badge ready).

• Only small bags for personal items (phone, wallet, keys) are allowed.

• NO large bags or totes allowed (we want a lot of space on the dance floor for you to boogie!).

• No bags allowed on the floor (we don’t want anyone tripping on them while groovin’).

• Once you leave the Dance Area, please get back in line to re-enter.

• No outside food or beverages are allowed in the Dance Area.

• Cosplay is encouraged but be mindful of large props. Staff may ask you to set them aside when dancing.

• Physical and/or verbal harassment of any kind will NOT be tolerated. This includes taunting.

• Chemical-based glow products (i.e. glow sticks, necklaces, or bracelets) are not allowed in the Dance Area.

• LED-based lighting products are allowed as long as they do not represent a danger to other attendees.

• NO laser pointers will be allowed.

• Unattended items found at the Dance will be held at the Dance Ops desk until the Dance ends each night. After that time, items will be relocated to Lost & Found.

Inclusion – All fans of music and dancing should feel welcomed.

Safety – Please look after your fellow fans. Co-Creation – FanimeCon is put on By Fans, For Fans such as yourself! This couldn’t be possible without you.

COVID-19 Notice

The Dance Area is a high traffic area and attending can increase chances of coming in contact with COVID-19. While precautions and high ventilation systems are in place, this does not guarantee a 100% safe environment. For this reason, FanimeCon COVID-19 policies will be strictly enforced in the Dance Area. If you are found to be in violation of these policies, you will be asked to leave with or without warning. Capacity will be limited during this time and doors to the outside terrace will remain open to provide ventilation. Social distancing will be recommended in the Dance Area and you may be asked to spread out. Dance staff or Security will give you instructions and you will be required to follow all directions given or be asked to leave.

Private Event Notice

The FanimeCon Dance is a private event hosted for the attendees of FanimeCon. An official FanimeCon badge is required for entry. A FanimeCon badge cannot be obtained at the entrance to the Dance Area and may not be available for purchase during Dance event hours. FanimeCon badges must be purchased at Registration during normal Registration hours (please visit fanime.com or ask the Info Desk for Registration hours).

Each year, the FanimeCon Masquerade holds a cosplay contest featuring astounding cosplay, performances, and

dance routines inspired by anime and manga as well as Asian films, video games, music stars, and more! The Masquerade is open to all FanimeCon attendees.

Returning to emcee the Masquerade in 2023 are our Guests of Honor, AICOSU. AICOSU are a couple cosplay team who focus on bringing more than just cosplay to the community. They are a duo you do NOT want to miss! Check out their panels throughout the weekend, stop by their booth in the Artist Alley, and then see them at the Masquerade on masking.

Following the satire and comedy tradition of Mystery Science Theater 3000, these anime abridged shows hold nothing sacred as they poke at plot holes and have a good laugh. First proposed by our attendees, FanimeCon introduced this room a few years ago and we have never looked back! We welcome you to join us in watching these fan-made parodies, which are often the most ridiculous

Come and see a classic screening from the past depths of Anime Hell. Will you see Forklift Driver Klaus –The First Day on the Job? Will Hard Gay make an appearance or will he be rejected by Don Hertzfeldt? Well, you’ll just have to come on in to the mouth of madness to see...

Anime Hell is a free-form video presentation featuring short film clips, commercials, failed pilots, amateur films, found video, instructional and educational films, music videos, and film trailers from Japan and elsewhere. Unfunny cable TV clip shows cannot compare to the live group fun of Anime Hell!

After the success of FanimeCon’s Silver Anniversary in 2019, we would like to announce the return of Silver Island, an area for older and mature audiences! To visit Silver Island, step aboard the shuttle service to the DoubleTree from the Convention Center area.
